Be careful of the common tendency of people to do the wave and smile when they are getting their portrait shots taken.
This is not a good look for wedding photography and you should advocate against it as much as possible. What you need to understand is that although most people think that waving and smiling makes them look friendly and approachable, it clearly takes away the concept of what a portrait is all about. A portrait shot is basically something that is deliberate and planned so doing a somewhat casual take on this is counter-productive. It does not bring anything into the equation but it tends to take a lot of things away from it at the end of the day. That is something that you should avoid from happening as much as possible. You need to make sure that you are able to more or less go for something that is posed and well planned.
Just explain the concept of the portrait shot before you proceed with the wedding photography shoot and people will more or less get the idea that waving and smiling is more or less frowned upon by professional wedding photographers such as yourself when it all comes down to it. Be clear and concise about what you would like to happen during the photo shoot but at the same time, make sure that you are able to keep your tone friendly and polite as well. You will eventually be able to more or less strike up a balance and make the whole thing work for you and for what you are trying to do when it all comes down to it.
Take note of the power of angles and of the kind of effects that they bring in to your portrait shots during wedding photography shoots.
There is basically just two basic principles for as far as angles are concerned. If you would like to shoot a portrait shot that indicates power or authority, then shoot the portrait with the angle shooting up. Try to go ahead and do this during instances wherein you are working with subjects who are small and who look vulnerable such as the elderly, children, babies, and so on. If you would like to make a subject look smaller and look slightly less vulnerable because of an overwhelming aura or presence, then you should go ahead and shoot the portrait with an angle that is looking down. This kind of angle is also something that works great if you would like to go for an effect that is slimming. Take note of the way that these angles work out because they are quite crucial to what you are trying to accomplish when you are taking portraits during the wedding photography shoots that you book with your clients.
